Hope Starts Here: Housing for Homeless College Students in Los Angeles

Imagine trying to focus on your studies when you don't know where you'll sleep tonight. This is the harsh reality for a growing number of college students—including student veterans—right here in Los Angeles.

In 2019, seeing this critical need firsthand, Gary Allison founded Fountain of Love Housing, a dedicated non-profit arm of Fountain of Love Community Church. His vision is simple yet powerful: to provide stable housing and crucial counseling to homeless college students—including those who have served in the military—in South Los Angeles, empowering them to achieve academic success and build a brighter future. Gary's entrepreneurial spirit and deep commitment to social impact drive this vital mission.

The crisis is real. While exact figures fluctuate, data from prior years paints a stark picture. In 2019, reports indicated that thousands of college students in the Los Angeles Community College District alone experienced homelessness. These young individuals, full of potential and striving for a better future through education, are being held back by the fundamental lack of safe and stable housing. 

This includes student veterans who have already given so much in service and now face the additional challenge of securing stable housing while pursuing their education.

At Fountain of Love Community Church, we believe that no student should have to choose between their education and a safe place to sleep. For years, our church has been a pillar of support in the community, offering hope and assistance to those facing hardship. Now, we are expanding our reach through Fountain of Love Housing to directly address the urgent need for student housing.

Without a secure home, these students face immense challenges:

• Difficulty concentrating on studies and completing assignments. 
• Lack of access to basic necessities like reliable internet, quiet study spaces, and nutritious meals.
• Increased stress, anxiety, and mental health struggles.
• Higher risk of dropping out of college, limiting their future opportunities.
   

Our initiative will provide:

• Safe and stable housing for homeless college students in South Los Angeles, including student veterans.
• A supportive and nurturing environment where they can focus on their education. 
• Access to counseling and resources to help them achieve long-term stability.
